Source measure units (SMUs) combine a precise current/voltage source with a measuring device in a single instrument. They can measure simultaneously whilesupplying power.
An SMU (source measure unit) supplies regulated voltage or current to a device under test (DUT) and simultaneously measures voltage, current and often also resistance or power.
Typically, it replaces the combination of a laboratory power supply, electronic load and digital multimeter, and often also pulse source and trigger functions in a synchronised device.
Characterisation of components (diodes, transistors, LEDs and sensors) using I-V characteristics, breakdown and leakage current measurements.
In addition, the power consumption and supply behaviour of ICs, DC/DC converters, batteries and low-power electronics are measured in the laboratory and in automated test systems.
