Comb generators are primarily intended for testing transmitting equipment. They are a useful tool to check the correct functioning of the antenna and the preamplifier as well as the correct setting and configuration of the spectrum analyser.

Depending on the model, they have the following functions:

Reference for radiated emissions
General purpose frequency multiplier
Reference for conducted emissions
