An electronic DC load is an extremely versatile instrument in measurement technology. It is used to test the response of power supplies, batteries and power converters under defined and variable conditions.

Areas of application:

  • Testing and characterisation of power supplies

    • Stability and control behaviour tests: By operating in different modes - such as constant current (CC), constant voltage (CV), constant power (CP) or constant resistance (CR) - a DC load device can investigate the dynamics and stability of power supplies and DC/DC converters. As part of the test, the reaction of the supply to load jumps is analysed. It also analyses whether overshoots occur and how quickly the control loops work.
    • Transient and surge load tests: Electronic DC loads enable rapid switching between different load profiles. This method can be used to simulate sudden load changes in order to assess the reaction of power supply units to short-term load peaks

  • Battery tests and energy measurements

    • Discharge curves and capacity measurements: In constant current mode, a DC load device can be used for the precise discharging of batteries. The voltage curve is recorded over time to determine the actual capacity, internal resistance and efficiency of the battery.
    • Evaluation of charging and discharging cycles: Real application scenarios are simulated using programmable load profiles in order to validate the behaviour of batteries (e.g. Li-ion cells) under variable conditions - for example at different temperatures or rapid load changes.

  • Simulation of real consumers and load conditions

    • Prototype testing and design optimisation: In the development process, electronic DC loads are used to simulate real consumers (such as LED drivers, motor controllers or solar panels). This simulation helps to check the behaviour of circuits in operation without always requiring an actual component as a load.
    • Determination of performance parameters: By continuously measuring voltage, current and power - often in real time - engineers can precisely analyse the efficiency, power dissipation and thermal behaviour of a system.

  • Automated test systems and quality assurance

    • Integration into test benches: Modern DC load devices can often be integrated into automated test systems and controlled via PC. This enables reproducible test cycles in series production, ensuring the quality and reliability of power supplies and power conversion units.
    • Precise documentation and analysis: The measured values are continuously recorded, allowing deviations to be detected at an early stage and necessary optimisations to be made to the control circuits or protective mechanisms.

  • Research and development

    • Simulation of dynamic load situations: In laboratory environments, an electronic DC load device supports the development of new products and the analysis of complex transient processes. It allows the investigation of control behaviour, load dependencies and the testing of extreme cases that could occur in practical applications.

    • Optimisation of design parameters: The ability to program complex and variable test profiles makes it possible to evaluate and optimise circuits in different operating modes - a decisive factor in the development of efficient and robust electronic systems.
